Shipping Mystery Snails

For most shipments, I use a 7″x 7″ x 6″ USPS Priority Mail box lined with Styrofoam. The Styrofoam helps make the box sturdy and also provides insulation from heat or cold. Priority Mail boxes typically get delivered within 2-3 days of being shipped. It’s important that someone is present on the day of delivery to reduce the amount of time the box may sit outside, exposed to the weather! Snails may die if they get too cold or too hot.

The snails are selected and placed in a double bag, filled with a small amount of tank water. A plant clipping and a paper towel are also inside the bag. I include an extra 1-2 snails with each order, just in case.

Mystery Snails breathe air through their siphons, so they need to be able to surface. The towel provides them with an area where they can crawl out of the water to breathe. The bags are filled with oxygen and sealed with a rubber band, and placed in additional insulation (paper, bubble wrap and/or packing peanuts) inside the Styrofoam lined box. The seams of the box are taped shut and it’s ready to to ship! The boxes typically arrive in 2-3 days.

I ship only on Mondays and Tuesdays to prevent delays. Extra time spent in transit can seriously compromise a snail’s health and may sometimes even lead to death.

My DOA [Dead on Arrival] policy is as follows:

Sometimes, animals become stressed in transit and may die.
